Political Turmoil in Nepal: Military Steps In After Leaders’ Resignations

International News: The anti-government movement in Nepal reached the heights of violence and chaos on Tuesday. The protests from the capital, Kathmandu, to the border districts became so fierce that the army had to directly take over the security late at night. From 10 pm, the Nepali army took command of the entire operation and first of all took control of Tribhuvan International Airport.

Air services halted; passengers had to return

In the evening, the protesters tried to enter the airport premises. Flights were stopped when the situation worsened. Air India canceled four out of six flights between Delhi and Kathmandu. Indigo and Nepal Airlines also suspended their services. Two Indian planes could not land on the runway and returned.

Government establishments and temples also targeted

The protesters started arson and vandalism. After burning several houses, the crowd moved towards the Singh Durbar Secretariat. The army intervened and took control of the building. The situation became more serious when the crowd tried to vandalize the gate of the holy Pashupatinath temple. The army immediately took charge and pushed back the crowd.

Why people got angry

Anger against the Oli government had been growing for a long time. Corruption, inflation, and the luxurious lifestyle of the leaders were troubling the common people. Especially the young generation, which is being called the face of the "Gen-G" movement, was constantly raising questions on social media. The government's ban on Facebook, X, and many digital platforms further fueled this resentment.

Demands of protesters

• The Oli government should be removed immediately.
• The freedom of expression of citizens should be protected.
• The retirement age should be fixed for leaders.

Warning for Indians

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has appealed to Indians living in Nepal to stay at home and avoid going out. The embassy has issued emergency numbers and advised travelers to postpone their travel to Nepal for the time being.

International concern

Apart from India, many countries, including America, Britain, France, Japan, and Germany, have issued a joint statement and appealed to Nepal to exercise restraint. Everyone has said that the situation should be resolved through peaceful dialogue and the protection of the fundamental rights of the people should be ensured.

Tension on the border too

The effect of the violent agitation is also visible on the Indo-Nepal border. Roads were blocked by burning tires in the Siraha, Dhanusha, and Birganj districts bordering Bihar. In the Siraha district headquarters, the mob set the police post on fire and pelted stones at the police. The martyr Hem Narayan Memorial was also damaged here.
